Restructuring the Infrastructure at Comfort Care
Friday, June 25, 2010
Recently Chief Executive Officer of senior healthcare provider, Comfort Care and Resources, Jim Fetzner has amended and added multiple positions to this rapidly growing company. Of the positions that have changed, Fetzner has redirected the duties of several administrative positions including those of his vice presidents’, head nursing staff, and scheduling management. Additionally, he has added 18 new positions to the care giving staff in order to develop a career path for workers in the healthcare industry.
On the progression of the company, Fetzner states, “Timing was just right. It was the next step to giving more responsibilities to our employees. The same problems keep cropping up [in the business] and we need a new way to solve them.”
Administration directly affected by these changes are the Vice President of Operations and Technology, VP of Growth and Marketing, Director of Care, and the Scheduling Manager—Each position receiving a new title and more responsibilities within the company. Michelle Steffy, the newly appointed Director of Care says, “The additional responsibilities were challenging to juggle at first, but it is exciting to see the new changes and growth within the company… It should bring us many opportunities.” Steffy’s responsibilities have increased from sales and overseeing some of the care giving staff, to handling all client admissions, overseeing all of the caregivers and patients, and handling consumer education.
The motivation behind the restructuring comes from the desire of Comfort Care to make the traditional nursing home irrelevant. “We believe that the old way of caring for people in nursing homes has to change. We believe we have found that better way. In order to grow and hold our business to these better standards we have to change the infrastructure of the company. In order to make this happen we had to give reliable, long time care givers more opportunities to develop and grow. We are investing in our workers and actually giving them a place to develop. At Comfort Care we offer careers that have a future,” says Fetzner.
Customarily, homecare is not very flexible or stable and most jobs within the industry are stagnant with nowhere to grow or develop into a real career pathway. This has lead to significantly low job retention rates and high turnovers. Comfort Care seeks to eliminate this problem by creating flexible, salaried positions, with career advancement opportunities available.
Newly developed positions within Comfort Care are: caregivers, care support, care leaders, and care managers. Caregivers are the beginning position of the corporate ladder, and do not require any specific degree or certification. The role of this position is to provide personalized assistance, (such as cleaning, cooking, bathing, or exercises) to the client. Care support positions are those that are part time/ per diem personnel that fill shifts on-call or as needed. As for Care Leaders, they are the core field staff that provides leadership and quality assurance to all clients of Comfort Care and Resources. These members can be general caregivers, certified nurse aides, or even licensed nurses. Finally, Nurse Care Managers oversee and lead all field staff to ensure that the client's they serve are able to age in place within Comfort Care & Resources long term care continuum. All of these changes are aimed at creating a team environment for the caregivers to rely on for support, advice and training as well as a stronger foundation of administrative support.
